How PTE turns into migration points
English is one of several factors on the skilled migration points test behind the subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas, sitting alongside points for age, skilled employment and qualifications. Your English result is scored at one of three levels — Competent, Proficient or Superior — and each level is worth a fixed number of points, shown in the table above.
The rule that catches people is how the level is decided. Each of your four skills is checked against that level's own minimum, and every skill has to clear it independently. There is no averaging and no trading a strong skill against a weak one, so the level you reach is set by your weakest skill relative to its threshold, not by your overall band.
Since 7 August 2025 those four minimums are different numbers rather than one figure repeated across every skill, and Speaking asks for the most. If you sat PTE before that date, the earlier uniform thresholds still apply to that result while it remains valid — check your test date before deciding which table you are reading.

Take an applicant who scores well across the board but a little lower in Speaking. Here is how the per-skill rule decides the outcome:

The overall band is 81, and three skills reach the Superior threshold on their own. But Speaking at 79 misses the Superior minimum of 88, and the level is set by the skill furthest from its target — so this profile earns 10 points (Proficient English), not the 20 the overall band alone might suggest.
