How PTE Scoring Works

How PTE Academic scoring actually works: the 10-90 scale, integrated scoring across skills, enabling skills, and what changed in August 2025.

The 10 to 90 scale

Every communicative skill and the overall score use the same 10 to 90 scale. There is no pass mark: institutions and visa authorities each set their own thresholds, which is why knowing your specific target matters more than chasing a round number.

Your overall score is derived, not measured

The overall band is the average of the four skill scores, rounded. It is not assessed separately. This matters because requirements expressed per skill — Australian skilled migration, most professional registrations — ignore the overall figure entirely.

Integrated scoring

Many tasks feed more than one skill. Write from Dictation contributes to Listening and Writing. Summarize Written Text contributes to Reading and Writing. Repeat Sentence contributes to Speaking and Listening. A single task type can therefore move two of your four scores, which is what makes some tasks far better value to practise than others.

Enabling skills

Alongside the four communicative skills, responses are assessed on underlying features such as grammar, spelling, vocabulary, oral fluency and pronunciation. These do not appear as separate headline scores but they shape the skill scores that do.

Human review on the essay

Since August 2025, Write Essay is reviewed by human experts rather than the automated scorer alone, assessing development, structure, coherence and language use. Memorised scaffolding scores poorly on precisely those traits.
