How the overall score is derived

The overall score is not a separate assessment. It is calculated from your four communicative skill scores, so it contains no information the four scores do not already carry. That has a practical consequence when you are planning: the effect of improving a skill on your overall score depends on how far below the others it sits, which is why raising your weakest skill lifts the overall figure faster than polishing a strong one. It also explains why two candidates with the same overall score can have very different profiles, one even across all four skills and one with a pronounced weakness. If a requirement includes both an overall figure and per-skill floors, the uneven profile can meet the first and fail the second.

Where the overall score is ignored

Several of the requirements people care about most do not use the overall score at all. Australian skilled migration assesses each of the four skills against its own published minimum, with no averaging and no compensation between skills; a candidate with a high average and one skill below its floor receives no English points. Requirements of this shape are common in immigration and in professional registration.
