Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Not objectively — but it is easier for some people, and predictably harder for others. Here is what actually differs.
Neither test is easier by design. PTE suits people who type quickly, speak comfortably to a microphone and work well under strict per-task timing. IELTS suits people who perform better in conversation and prefer skills tested separately. The honest answer is that the easier test is the one that matches how you work.
Where PTE is genuinely easier
Scoring is granular, so hitting an exact threshold is more achievable than with half-band IELTS scores. Speaking is recorded rather than conducted with an examiner, which suits people who find interviews stressful. Results arrive faster, which matters when a deadline is close.
Where PTE is genuinely harder
Timing is strict per task and there is no scheduled break. Audio plays exactly once. Typing speed affects the writing and dictation tasks in a way it does not on paper-based IELTS. And you cannot resit a single weak skill — the whole test has to be retaken.
The honest answer
Neither test is easier by design; both are calibrated against the same underlying ability. The easier test is the one that matches how you work. If you type quickly, speak comfortably into a microphone and hold up under time pressure, PTE will feel easier. If you perform better in conversation and prefer separated sections, IELTS will.
